Aryeh Shechopek Obituary, Death – A Jerusalem seminary rabbi identified a 16-year-old Canadian-Israeli student as a blast victim. Aryeh Shechopek was a special student, according to Rabbi Refaen Rockmill. Always happy Everyone loved him. Rockmill said Wednesday, “He loved everyone.” “He tried his best in life, doing the right things and being a good person.” The Harei Yehuda Yeshiva will miss Aryeh, he said. The teen started his second year in September.
Rockmill said the boy wasn’t feeling well and was debating attending classes. He died waiting for the bus, said the rabbi. Rockmill said, “He decided to come despite waking up miserable.” “He decided to come because he loves the place and… we’re a family.” Rockmill says another student waiting with Aryeh survived. “We love each other and know what God wants us to do,” said Rockmill. We’ll do the best we can to handle it.
Police believe the blasts near bus stops during rush hour were Palestinian attacks, killing one teen and injuring 18 others. “It exploded wildly.” A medic who witnessed the first explosion said, “There’s damage everywhere.” “Open wounds were everywhere.” First blast occurred near a busy bus stop on the outskirts of town. The second occurred a half-hour later in Ramot, a city suburb.
Justin Trudeau condemned the attacks and praised Aryeh on Twitter. “I’m saddened by the death of a Canadian in Jerusalem” Trudeau: “My condolences to his family and friends.” “I’m thinking of the injured.” “Canada strongly condemns this violence.” Lisa Stadelbauer, Canada’s ambassador to Israel, confirmed the victim was Canadian. Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have been rising for months due to nightly Israeli raids in the occupied West Bank in response to 19 spring attacks on Israelis. Recently, Palestinian attacks have increased.
Police found shrapnel-laden explosive devices while searching for the attackers. More officers were sent to the city after the explosions, they said. Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip and has carried out suicide bombings against Israelis, praised the attackers but didn’t claim responsibility. Hamas spokesman Abd al-Latif al-Qanua said “the occupation is paying for its crimes and aggression” This year has seen the most Palestinian deaths in Israeli-Palestinian fighting in the West Bank and east Jerusalem since 2006. In the latest Palestinian attacks, eight Israelis were killed.
