- by Alex Danvers
Dave Schultz Obituary, Death – When people think of the BullShooter Tour, they can’t help but think about Tournament Director Dave Schultz, who is also known by the nickname “Big Kahuna.” This is due to the fact that Schultz is one of the players on the circuit who has the greatest amount of name recognition. Dave began working for Arachnid 360 in 1988, and one of his jobs at that time was to go around the country to drive for qualifying regionals.
As a runner or an assistant, he took part in a significant number of large and state-level competitions. Dave served as Tournament Director for a period of 25 years, during which time he was away from home an average of 32 weeks per year. During that time, he was introduced to and became friends with a great number of people who played darts, with whom he shared a great many pleasurable moments.
Dave made his debut as a musician in 1981 at the State Street Station in Rockford, Illinois, where he was working as a bartender at the time. When he was first introduced to the game of darts, it was his sister Nancy Hodges, as well as his brother-in-law and close friend Bobby Hodges, who were the ones who initially piqued his interest in it. Dave faced out against a number of very skilled competitors from the surrounding area, some of which included Scott North, Steve “Doc” Johnson, Jim Dickinson, Milly Smith, and Nancy Hodges, amongst others.
Dave has remarked that his two most memorable triumphs were the Pro Singles championship he won in Madison, Wisconsin in 1987 and the third-place finish he obtained at his very first TBI Open in 1984. Both of these accomplishments took happened in 1984. That was the first ever trophy I won for playing darts. Dave had the most enjoyable times while he was playing darts with Jim Dickinson, his partner in the Men’s Doubles competition for many years. During such times, Dave had the greatest amount of laughter and enjoyment.
Within the industry, many referred to them as the “Billboard Brothers.” Dave and Jim went on to win the Regional competition that was held in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1986. His last year of constant participation in leagues for Foxy’s Lounge, which was located in Rockford, Illinois, was the 1988 season. Prior to that year, he had played for a number of establishments in the area.
The members of the master’s league champion team that year were Dave, Sam Zammuto, Steve Johnson, and Wally Meredith, and they ended up winning the championship. Despite the fact that Dave worked a lot of long hours, including the majority of weekends during tournament season, Dave’s favorite way to spend his time off was on the golf course.
