Emily Sotelo Obituary, Death -The body of a hiker from Massachusetts who had gone missing while hiking on a well-known mountain trail in New Hampshire was discovered on Wednesday morning. The body of Emily Sotelo, 20, was discovered after a three-day search in which rescuers battled bone-chilling temperatures and high winds, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division. The hunt lasted three days.

According to authorities, Sotelo went hiking along Franconia Ridge by herself on Sunday and never returned. Her disappearance was reported by a member of her family, and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement began searching for her that evening. According to officials, multiple agencies discovered tracks and items belonging to Sotelo near the headwaters of Lafayette Brook on Tuesday. Sotelo’s family discovered the tracks and items.

According to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, her body was discovered at 11:15 a.m. on the northwest side of Mount Lafayette, and it was then transported to the Cannon Mountain Ski Area by helicopter from the New Hampshire Army National Guard. According to a Vanderbilt University spokesperson, Sotelo was a sophomore majoring in biochemistry and chemical biology. The university provided this information to The Tennessean.

The Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team, which was participating in the effort, provided an update on Monday, stating that more than sixty people on the ground were searching the area with the assistance of helicopters when the weather permitted. Fish and Game Maj. David Walsh told WMUR that hikers in New Hampshire should “be prepared for the unexpected” when visiting the White Mountains.

“One of the most important lessons learned in a tragedy like this is to hike in New Hampshire, especially in the White Mountains,” Walsh said. “Remember to always arm yourself with knowledge. Maintain an awareness of the current weather conditions. Dress in weather-appropriate attire. Make sure you have extra clothes. Always have some extra food and water on hand. Always keep a map and a compass with you.”

As of Wednesday, there had been no official announcement about the cause of death.
