Fred Tokars Obituary, Death – Fred Tokars of Atlanta, Georgia has passed away unexpectedly. Fred was adored by family and friends who nurtured and loved him and his older brother after their mother was murdered in 1992; his tenacious curiosity, compassionate heart, infectious sense of humor, kindred spirit, and remarkable zest for life. Fred was born in Atlanta, Georgia on April 20. Atlanta and the rest of the country were heartbroken when they learned about the two brave little boys who ran through a dark field to a distant house after witnessing their mother’s murder and begged the stunned homeowner to call for help for their mother.
Following the murder, the boys were raised in Bradenton, Florida, by their maternal grandparents, former Manatee County Health Director Dr. John Ambrusko and his wife Phyllis. Although Fred had no intention of allowing his mother’s murder to define him, the heinous events instilled in him a desire to make things better and would define him for the rest of his life. Fred attended Manatee High School in Bradenton, where he participated in football, track, and crew for the Sarasota Scullers.
Fred received his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida and his master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York. Previously, Fred worked as a reporter and content producer for The Christian Science Monitor, The New York Post, and The National Memo, as well as a researcher for the television show “Crime Watch Daily With Chris Hansen.”

He was a gifted artist, avid traveler, surfer and snowboarder, and music enthusiast. During his brief life, he visited Atlanta, New York City, and Los Angeles, making countless meaningful friends along the way. Bradenton, Florida, and the surrounding area had always been his home.
