Harry Dunlop Obituary, Death – On November 16th, Harry Dunlop, a former coach in Major League Baseball who had a long career in the league, passed away at the age of 89. The following is a passage from his obituary that may be seen online: “Harry was raised in Oak Park and went to Sacramento High School after being born to Scottish parents who had immigrated to the United States. At the age of 18, he debuted as a professional baseball player after being selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 1951 in the amateur draft. Baseball was a part of his life for the following 52 years, despite the fact that he was in the military for two years during the Korean War.
In May of 1952, while playing for the Bristol Twins in the Appalachian League, Harry was the catcher who was on the field for Ron Necciai’s 27-strikeout performance over the course of nine innings. It is a record that has never been broken in the history of professional baseball and it still stands today. Although Harry was never able to play in the major leagues, he did serve as a coach in the major leagues for a total of 21 years, beginning in 1969 and ending in 2005.” During his lengthy career, Mr. Dunlop served as a coach for the following Major League Baseball teams: During his time in Kansas City, he worked for Jack McKeon, the manager of the Royals, for a total of 212 years, beginning in 1973 and continuing through the middle of 1975.
McKeon was a former minor league catcher in the Pirates’ organization, just like Dunlop, and the two developed a strong professional association together. When Dunlop began coaching for the Padres, McKeon was the general manager of the team. McKeon subsequently promoted Dunlop to the position of field coordinator of minor league instruction inside the Padres organization’s farm system (1988–90). In his late-career managerial jobs with the Reds (1998–2000) and Florida Marlins, for whom Dunlop served as a coach in 2005 when he was 71 years of age, and McKeon, his supervisor, was 74 at the time, McKeon added Dunlop to his coaching staff. My condolences go out to his family and friends, and may he finally find some peace in his passing.
