About the University of Southern California

USC, SC, or Southern Cal[a] is the name of a private research university in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. It is California’s oldest private research university and was established by Robert M. Widney in 1880. With 22 undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools and one liberal arts school, the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences, the institution enrolls about 21,000 undergraduate and 28,500 postgraduate students from all 50 U.S. states and more than 115 countries.

In 1969, it became a member of the Association of American Universities.  One of the best colleges in the country, USC has a reputation for being extremely selective when it comes to admissions.  Due in large part to the success of the School of Cinematic Arts, USC has graduated more alumni who have gone on to win Academy and Emmy Awards than any other institution in the world and has also produced 29 living billionaires.

11 Rhodes Scholars and 12 Marshall Scholars are among USC’s famous alums. Ten Nobel laureates, six MacArthur Fellows, and one Turing Award recipient were associated with the university as of January 2021. The Domain Name System, VoIP, DNA computing, transform coding, and dynamic programming are all innovations that originated at USC.

USC participates in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as a member of the Pac-12 Conference and provides a number of intramural sports. The Trojans, USC’s sports teams, have members who have won 107 NCAA team championships, placing them third in the country, and 412 NCAA individual championships, placing them second among NCAA Division I institutions and third in the country. More than any other American university, Trojan athletes have brought home 326 medals from the Olympics as of 2021 (153 golds, 96 silvers, and 77 bronzes).  The second-highest number of draftees in the nation, 537 football players from USC have been selected by the National Football League.
