James Mcdonough Obituary, Boston MA, James Mcdonough Has Passed Away

James Mcdonough Obituary, Death – James Mcdonough of Boston, Massachusetts has unexpectedly passed away. On July 15, Patrick James and Elizabeth (Parsons) McDonough of South Boston gave birth to James. He grew up in Mattapan and attended Hyde Park High School before graduating in 1944. He was extremely fortunate that the war ended in 1945, just as he was finishing his Marine Corps training. He then worked as a Military Guard Patrolman at the Portsmouth (NH) Naval Base’s Disciplinary Barracks until his honorable discharge.

James had publicly stated that G.I. Bill benefits enabled his education and subsequent career. In 1951, he received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Whitman & Howard Engineers & Architects in Boston hired him as a Civil Engineer right away (later, Wellesley.) He was so enthusiastic about his work that he went on to become a Professional Engineer in ten states and, later, a full national certification. His specialty was wastewater treatment plants and processes. He retired from Whitman & Howard as Senior Vice President after 35 years of service.

In 1957, James married Louise Flynn, and they raised their four children in Quincy for the next 30 years. He was also a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel’s Holy Name Society. James possessed exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, and he was capable of repairing or reworking almost any household item. Perhaps because he grew up during the Great Depression, he was able to get more mileage out of a simple repair and would frequently joke, “It’ll be good for another 50 years!” He was famous for his skill with a slide rule, which he carried with him at all times, at work, at home, and even in his car. His dependable slide rule was just as useful as he was.

James adored Falmouth and relished his nearly 35-year retirement there. He was happiest when he was with his family, especially over a meal, and Seafood Sam’s was an all-time favorite for 46 years! During his retirement, James spent many happy days on his boat with family and friends fishing for bluefish and striped bass. He’d also visited Ireland 39 times, where he formed close bonds with cousins and researched genealogy for the McDonough and Fitzhenry families. James had previously served as a consultant and, later, as a Commissioner for the Falmouth Department of Public Works.

Louise (Flynn) McDonough, his beloved wife of 45 years, his parents, and his beloved siblings, Lillian Cox of Andover, Robert McDonough of Watertown, and William McDonough of Weymouth, all predeceased him. James is survived by two daughters, Marie McDonough of Westborough, Massachusetts, and Patricia Henderson and husband Mark of Pembroke, Massachusetts, as well as two sons, John McDonough of Attleboro, Massachusetts, and Stephen McDonough of Falmouth, Massachusetts. He leaves behind nine adoring grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His mother, Mary Lou Barbagallo of Belmont, MA, and sisters-in-law, Barbara Carroll of Falmouth, MA, and Joan Moore of Maple Valley, WA, survive him. Finally, James is survived by many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
