Jim Lorimer Obituary, Death – Jim Lorimer, a co-founder of the Arnold Festival, died on Thursday. Arnold Schwarzenegger confirmed Lorimer’s death in a statement posted to his Twitter account. The Arnold Sports Festival is an annual men’s bodybuilding competition held in Columbus. Tens of thousands of spectators and competitors attend this event. The Arnold Sports Festival has been held annually since its inception in 1989. Jim Lorimer will be remembered for the rest of their life by the millions of people he inspired to join our fitness campaign and get involved in the rather obscure sport of bodybuilding. His legacy will live on.
Jim’s entire family, including myself, is still with us. I’ll never be able to call myself a success because of him. When I first met Jim 52 years ago in Columbus, Ohio, during the Mr. World bodybuilding tournament he had so brilliantly planned, I knew he would play an important role in my life. I promised him that once I was done competing in bodybuilding, we would collaborate to promote the sport. And for more than 50 years, beginning with a handshake agreement in 1976, we have done just that, growing from a small bodybuilding show to a sports festival with 200,000 visitors and more athletes than the Olympics, all while expanding from Ohio to inspire people on every continent except Antarctica. When President Bush appointed me Chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in 1990, I knew I needed Jim by my side, and boy, was I right.
Jim, as Chairman of the Council, was a tremendous help to me. He contributed his amazing legal mind to the effort when we were working with all of the government agencies and hundreds of bureaucrats to organize the Great American Workout on the lawn of the White House, which helped convert what seemed impossible into things that were actually achievable. Jim will be remembered fondly by everyone he inspired to live a happier and healthier life. Many people believe Jim and I were the first to market sports, but this is not the case. His fitness and health campaign began much earlier when he worked to improve the conditions of female track and field athletes.
