Jim Winkler Obituary, Death – Jim Winkler of Portland Oregon has passed away unexpectedly. On May 25, 1934, he was born in Alexandria, Virginia to his parents, the late Coast Guard Commander Anthony P. Winkler and Mary H. Winkler (nee Hall). His parents were residents of Alexandria at the time of his birth. He was the son of his late parents. Those who are left behind after his passing include his loving wife Sue as well as their children James Anthony, Daniel Gerard (spouse Magui), Pamela Susan (spouse Mitch Dudley), Dianne Marie (spouse Joe Ryder), Christopher John (spouse Kristi), and Brian David.
His devoted wife Sue is also among those who are left behind (spouse Kim). Jim is also survived by his two brothers, David and Charles (who is married to Stephanie), as well as his sisters-in-law, Marcia Sue and Karen Winkler. In addition, David and Charles are both married to Stephanie. Jim’s five brothers and his sister all passed away before him. His sister also predeceased him (Therese, Paul, Tony, Frank, Richard and Robert). In addition, Jim leaves behind a large number of nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as twenty grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and twenty generations of grandchildren. The month of March will see the arrival of one of his great-grandchildren. It was in the year 1960 when he and Sue decided to make Alexandria their permanent residence.
After serving for three and a half years as a pilot in the United States Air Force and earning a degree in electrical engineering from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., Jim was given an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force. He was also awarded a medal for his service. Following the passing of Jim’s father, Jim assumed the role of primary caregiver for his aging mother. Jim has spent the better part of the last four decades working as a design engineer and manager for a number of significant satellite projects for the Navy at the Naval Research Laboratory. His work has been recognized as having a significant impact on those projects. Jim and Sue have been contributing members of the community at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Alexandria for the better part of sixty years. In addition to that, for a good portion of his life, he was an active participant in the activities of the Knights of Columbus.
