Judi Billing Obituary, Judi Billing has passed away unexpectedly
- by Alex Danvers
Judi Billing Obituary, Death – Judi has served as a member of the Hertfordshire County Council since 2013, when she was elected to represent the Hitchin North division. She has also held the position of Leader of the Hertfordshire Labour Group. Since 1980, she had never missed a day of work as a District Councillor for North Hertfordshire Council, where she represented the Hitchin Bearton ward and was the Executive Member for Community Engagement. In her employment at the Local Government Association, she worked to help councilors be effective and to identify ways to enhance local government. She did this regardless of which party they belonged to.
Judi’s sense of humor, generosity of spirit, and dogged determination to make Hertfordshire a better place for everyone will be sorely missed by each and every one of us in the Labour Party. Our hearts go out to her family and all of her other friends during this difficult time. Cllr. Ian Albert expressed his devastation at the passing of his dear friend and olleague Judi Billing, saying, “I am completely and utterly heartbroken.” After the death of my wife, she was supportive and compassionate, and I will never forget it. And the tremendous and unwavering dedication that Judi has shown to serving the people of Hitchin and the rest of Hertfordshire throughout her life will never be forgotten. She has been of assistance to a great number of individuals for over 40 years.
Judi is absolutely irreplaceable. Everyone was familiar with her! In this most difficult time, my deepest condolences go out to all of her family and friends, as well as to her wonderful dog Pedro.
As Councilors, we will make every effort to provide service that is commensurate with the expectations that she has established for us. RIP Judi. Much love. Ian xx ” According to Councilwoman Elizabeth Dennis-Harburg, “Words cannot explain the grief that we are suffering.” Judi was not just a friend to me, but also a guide and a model to look up to, and she was always ready to assist me in any way she could, including lending me her tumble dryer when mine broke. Her sharp wit, sharp mind, and tireless fight for Hitchin and our communities will be much missed by me.
Judi was a remarkable person who touched the lives of countless people; she was genuinely one of a kind. Baroness “I am sorry to find that my great inspiration, mentor, and friend Judi Billing, Leader of our county Labour Group and a towering figure in Labour local government, has gone away,” said Sharon Taylor of Stevenage. “I am deeply saddened by this news.” My thoughts and prayers are with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild, all of whom were the objects of her justifiable and disproportionately excessive pride. Judi was an inspiration to a great number of us as councillors, and the fact that she worked to improve local governments all across the country meant that she affected (and made better) the way in which we serve our communities.
She led our group at the County Council with flair and power greater than our numbers would suggest, and she will be missed across the Labour local government family in Hitchin, where she served as a local councillor, as well as at the County Council and at the County Council. One of our most important and extraordinary advocates has passed away, and this has been a blow to both our movement and our local government.
