Kunmanara Hoosan Obituary, Death – Kunmanara Hoosan is being remembered as a compassionate and determined leader who made an “enormous impact” to his community despite passing away unexpectedly in the middle of the night in Darwin. This is despite the fact that Kunmanara Hoosan passed away in the middle of the night. Those who had known him personally were taken aback by the news of his passing. His sudden passing came as a shock to everyone who knew him. In the beginning of this year, Mr. Hoosan was chosen to serve as the chair of the Central Land Council (CLC), despite the fact that his first name and image cannot be used for cultural reasons.
This honor was bestowed upon Mr. Hoosan after he had devoted a significant portion of his professional life to working for the Indigenous people of Central Australia. Even his first name is off limits due to the cultural norms and expectations that surround it. People who have passed away are referred to as kunmanara in both Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara. This term originates from the Pitjantjatjara language and is used in both of these languages. Les Turner, the Chief Executive Officer of CLC, paid tribute to him after his passing by remembering him as a “well-loved and highly regarded guy” whose “compassion extended to those he worked with.” It was in reference to the fact that he was “compassionate to those he worked with” that he made this statement.
After learning of the tragic news, Mr. Turner issued a statement in which he expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and coworkers of the deceased person. The Anangu man is also well-known for his ardent advocacy in the drive to both raise the age of criminal responsibility and put an end to the practice of abusing one’s spouse or significant other. He has become a prominent figure in both of these movements in recent years. Throughout the course of his life, he held a number of different jobs, some of which included those of a police officer, a CLC field officer, a health worker, and the chair of the NT Uniting Church. He also served as a health worker.
When he passed away in Darwin, he was in the city to attend a meeting of the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority, an organization for which he had served on the board of directors. This meeting was taking place at the time of his passing. He held a position on the organization’s board of directors at one point in time.
