Paul Albright Obituary, Death – After a valiant fight with esophageal cancer, Paul Andrew Albright passed away. Gary and Joan Albright welcomed him into the world on November 12, 1966, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Paul attended Greenville High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete and cellist in the symphony, and graduated in 1984. Paul attended Miami University (OH) after high school, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Paper Science & Engineering in 1988. Before landing in Atlanta, Georgia, Paul traversed the nation and worked at a variety of paper mills and engineering firms.
Since his son Andrew (Andy) was born in 1997, Paul has been a proud father and long-time volunteer youth baseball and basketball coach. Paul enjoyed playing golf with his loved ones, friends, and clients. He was renowned for his long drives and forceful putting. Early in his playing career in the 1990s, Paul discovered his lifetime passion for volleyball refereeing. Paul traveled the world working the highest levels of competition, including several men’s and women’s World Championships, Olympic Qualifiers, World League, Volleyball Nations League, and more. Paul was known as one of the top FIVB International Volleyball Referees in the world.
Additionally, he officiated volleyball at all levels both indoors and outdoors in the United States, including numerous assignments for the NCAA Women’s Division I Volleyball Championship and two Final Four appearances. In addition, he had a long career as a paralympic event referee. In addition to his accomplishments as a referee, Paul relished the chance to support his volleyball community by educating and teaching others, affecting the careers of countless volleyball officials both domestically and internationally. Paul received the Professional Association of Volleyball (PAVO) Honor Award for 2021 and was entered into the PAVO Hall of Fame.
Son Andrew (Renee) Albright, father Gary Albright, siblings Laura (Bob) Moore, Mike (Barbara), and Mark (Lisa), nieces and nephews Candice DeBoer, Chase and Erin Albright, Maggie and Ryan Moore, Abbigail and Emily Albright, great-niece Emilie DeBoer, and former spouse June Albright are the survivors of Paul. Mother Joan Albright, niece Andrea Clark, and nephew-in-law Eric DeBoer predeceased Paul. The family of Paul would like to express their sincere gratitude to the care teams from Advocate Sherman Cancer Institute, the University of Chicago, Transitions Hospice, and Illinois Cancer Specialists. Later on, there will be a Celebration of Life.
