Robert Appel Obituary, An integral part of the Weill Cornell community dies

Robert Appel Obituary, Death – Robert J. APPEL. Bob Appel was a beloved member of the Weill Cornell Medicine family. He was also a respected leader and generous donor. Bob and his wife Helen were both strong supporters of Weill Cornell Medicine. We are a better institution due of Bob’s dedication and leadership over the course of more than 20 years at Weill Cornell. He joined the Executive, Membership & Governance, and Development Committees after being elected to the Board of Fellows in 2004.

Weill Cornell Medicine was lucky to reap the benefits of Bob’s limitless enthusiasm and dedication, as he gave his all to everything he undertook. Bob was well-liked not only by his peers on the Board of Fellows but also by our teachers, students, and staff. Thanks to his and Helen’s generosity, the Helen and Robert Appel Alzheimer’s Disease Research Institute was founded, and it will serve as a lasting memorial to his commitment to medical research and improving the world.

His dedication to Weill Cornell Medicine and belief in the transformative power of philanthropy are on full display in his role as chairman of our “”Discoveries that Make a Difference”” campaign, which raised more than $1.6 billion and crushed its own record. We will be forever thankful to Bob for his leadership and dedication, which left an indelible impression on Weill Cornell Medicine.

Known for his famed wit and candor, Bob was the perfect representative of our institution and community. Bob’s dedication to our parent university and our clinical partner gave him unique perspective on the potential of academic medicine. Bob, a Cornell alum, took great delight in serving as a member of the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Board of Trustees and as a trustee emeritus of Cornell University’s Board of Trustees.

His friendliness, generosity, and generosity are what we will remember him for the longest. Our deepest sympathies go out to Helen, their daughters Susan and Debra, and all of his other friends and family members. We all know that it’s a long list because of how exceptional Bob was.
