Ross Thomas Obituary, death – Ross Iain Thomas unexpectedly passed away on November 14, 2022, the same day that he was scheduled to undergo surgery. His passing will cause his coworkers to experience a great deal of sadness. Ross was a dedicated archaeologist who specialized in the study of ancient maritime networks and technologies. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Durham University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Southampton. In addition to being a foremost authority on Roman port communities in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea, he is also a prolific author who has written a lot about the Hellenistic and Nubian worlds.
His research has taken him to the United Kingdom, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, and the United Arab Emirates on land, as well as underwater in Israel and Egypt. He has also done fieldwork in the United Arab Emirates. Co-Director of the Red Sea Wrecks Survey (2010-2011) and Director of the British Museum Naukratis Fieldwork Project, he was in charge of leading fieldwork at multiple locations around the world. The British Museum is acting as a repository for both of these projects. Ross started his career in the Museum in 2011 and has been working as a Project Curator on the Naukratis Project since then. In 2016, he was given the title of Curator of Roman Collections as a result of his promotion.
In addition to being committed to his work, he held a strong commitment to assisting the community. Ross was a fervent supporter of students, particularly those who came from less privileged backgrounds, and he organized annual placements for students in museums. He was also an avid collector. In addition to serving on the boards of several organizations that give grants, he was a trustee of the Palestine Exploration Fund, the Roman Society, and most recently the Brading Roman Villa on the Isle of Wight. This site, which is perched above the family home where he grew up and which served as an inspiration for his future career, is located on the Isle of Wight.
In addition to that, he served on the boards of directors for a number of organizations that provide financial aid. He possessed a vast amount of talent and was held in high regard by a lot of people. His death came at a relatively young age of 44, and he was survived by his wife, their two children, ages 7 and 4, as well as by his parents and brother. His parents and brother also survive him. After his passing, he will be greatly missed by all of those he leaves behind, including his family, friends, and coworkers. When it is practical to do so, additional information regarding the memorial arrangements and the family’s contact preferences will be made available to the public.
