Sandee Levin Obituary, Death – We share Sandee Levin’s loss, a close friend and colleague, with much grief. On November 19, a Saturday, she died. She oversaw the creation of LeadingAge Virginia during her 27 years as president and chief executive officer of the Virginia Association of Nonprofit Homes for the Aging (VANHA). I am incredibly grateful to Sandee for everything she taught me. I am LeadingAge Virginia’s vice president and legislative counsel. Even now, it is challenging to fully express the significant influence she had on my life and the lives of people connected to our organization. She taught me in so many ways on both a professional and a personal level. Her integration of these two facets of her life to assure a favorable effect on the aging services industry was simply fascinating to witness.
She helped me develop some other important roles in my life, such as being a wife and mother, in addition to teaching me how to be a successful lobbyist. Her top two priorities were these. Being a working mother and juggling various facets of life was challenging, but Sandee made sure that each day had a distinct focus on each. I will always be grateful that my husband and kids were able to become an extended part of Sandee’s life and family.
Sandee thought that developing relationships was the key to success in every circumstance. Every challenge we encountered together, she excelled. Above all, she entered events with humor to diffuse any possible tensions and provide a solid basis to advance the situation. I quickly came to understand that she had immense power because so many people in politics liked her. Her influence even extended to the mere mention of her name. I could tell you a ton of hilarious tales about Sandee and my experiences in the Capitol, traveling to meet with members, or just relaxing at our Innsbrook office.
In recognition of all that she had accomplished for our field, the General Assembly adopted a resolution in her honor in 2015. She has served with dedication for 27 years, and Senate Joint Resolution No. 223 is still in effect.
Mike Martin, a former chair of VANHA and president of Riverside Retirement Services, recently praised Sandee, saying, “She enthusiastically transformed VANHA from a one-person staff to a very effective professional company. The varied membership of Virginia was a natural match for Sandee. We collaborated for a very long time with the goal of helping the member organizations. She was a staunch supporter of VANHA-LeadingAge. Her initiatives have contributed significantly to the evolution of the industry association.
