Sandy Jones Obituary, Death – Jones’s involvement with the organization headquartered at The Belfry began in 1980, when he accepted a position there as the secretary for the Scottish Region. After that, he relocated south of the border to take over as the company’s chief executive in 1991, a position he maintained for the next quarter of a century. A former president of the Golf Foundation and chairman of The Ryder Cup Trust, he also served in such capacities in the past. The PGA was one of the founding partners of the Ryder Cup, and as a board member, he was instrumental in growing it into one of the largest sporting events in the world.

He was also instrumental in establishing a charitable arm that enables revenues from the Ryder Cup to be used for the advancement of the game of golf. In recognition of Jones’ exceptional contributions to golf and sport more generally, the University of Birmingham bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate in the year 2009. “This is a very sad day for the association,” said Robert Maxfield, the chief executive of The PGA. Sandy served as the leader of The PGA for more than 25 years, during which time the organization saw tremendous transformation and progress as a result of his efforts.

Because of his work with the Ryder Cup, the PGA World Alliance, and the PGAs of Europe, he was an important figure not only in golf in Great Britain and Ireland but also in the sport of golf around the world. Many people held him in high regard and admiration, and the organization owes him a tremendous debt of appreciation for all that he did. Jones had a residence in the Midlands after relocating to The Belfry, but he also owned a home in Gleneagles, which was where he was most pleased to have the Ryder Cup played in 2014. In 2014, the Ryder Cup was held at Gleneagles.
