Simon Gladman Obituary, Death – The news that our dear friend and fellow worker, Simon Gladman, passed away unexpectedly comes to us with a great deal of regret. Simon was a prominent member of the neighborhood for many years, and his passing will result in a significant void in a variety of important respects. The members of his Melbourne Bioinformatics and Galaxy Australia teams looked up to Simon as a role model because he was not only a generous supporter but also a trusted advisor. The impressive legacy he left behind will be preserved thanks to the countless friends and admirers he had.
It has been an honor and a privilege to know Simon for the better part of a decade. Normally, I would say that over the course of that time, we became close friends; however, in reality, that happened in a matter of days, as it did for virtually everyone Simon met. Simon was a people person first and foremost, and he made friends not just easily, but by default. If he met you, he liked you, and if you met him, you liked him back – that was just the way it was.
Throughout the entirety of my acquaintance with Simon, I had the privilege of working alongside him. Simon was someone who I could count as both a highly respected coworker and a very dear friend, which is not something that happens very frequently. My heart leaps for joy whenever I recall how much Simon cherished his work and excelled at it to an extraordinary degree. Simon, who was a people person, enjoyed creating things and seeing them used by a large number of people for the common good. He did exactly that, to an extent that not many others were able to match. He was a global leader and a pillar of the Galaxy community, and his passing will leave a devastatingly large void in the lives of so many people all over the world, in terms of their careers, their social lives, and their emotional well-being.
It is difficult to find a weak spot in Simon’s defenses. He was a leader when something needed to be led, a powerhouse when something needed to be done, a joke teller when you needed a laugh, a counselor when you were upset, a mentor, a supporter, an extraordinary father and partner. He was a leader when something needed to be led. He was a powerhouse when something needed to be done. He was a joke teller when you needed a laugh. Simon was the person who showed up at the bar when you needed a drink, who came to your house when you needed a hand, who was the first to volunteer to assist, and who was the last person to leave the event.
Amongst all that, Simon somehow found time for volunteer firefighting in his beloved west Melbourne and it won’t surprise anyone to know that in this very demanding job, when tragedy of all types struck his community, Simon was first on hand to pick up the pieces. He wanted nothing in return. I don’t think I saw him in anything but a good mood for the entire time I knew him and it always cheered me up seeing him. He had the gift of infecting you with his optimism and motivation just by being there – whatever the challenge was, there was an upside that Simon would find and then bring everyone along. ‘Blessed are the cheesemakers’ – Simon would have laughed at that. To me he was a friend first and always. I will miss him enormously.
