- by Alex Danvers
Wayne Crockett Obituary, Death – The Club is in deep mourning over the passing of Wayne Crockett, who was among its most cherished volunteers. The following week. This eulogy was written by his sister, Karen, and you can read it below. The news that Wayne passed away suddenly on November 20, 2022, when he was 66 years old, is a sad one for our family to share. In Fort Erie, on the 12th of September in 1957, Wayne was born. Arnold Crockett (1972) and Ruth (nee Neale) Crockett (2013), as well as his brother Murray Crockett, both passed away before he did. He is the only surviving child of his parents (1994).
He was the brother of David Crockett, who married Marcia Crockett; Douglas Crockett, who married Dawn Crockett; Tom Crockett, who married Debbie Walton; and Karen Crockett (Scott Wiseman). He was the uncle to a total of eight nieces and nephews and the great uncle to a total of twelve nieces and nephews. Wayne spent his childhood in the more rural areas around Point Abino and Crystal Beach, where he attended public schools in the area. He received his high school education from Ridgeway Crystal Beach. The number of Wayne’s scholastic accomplishments was impressive. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science from York’s Glendon College, a Master of Arts degree in history from Queens University, and a Master of Library Science degree from Western University. He attended all three institutions.
His work experience as a professional included a significant amount of time spent in the provincial archives in both Saskatoon and Toronto. He was very involved in the professional archivist association he belonged to, helping to organize educational conferences and training workshops. Wayne remained a single man throughout his entire life. He had a passion for the kitchen and especially for baking, and his crock pot meatballs became a family tradition. He was known for his Monty Python impressions and quotes, which contributed to his reputation for having a razor-sharp wit and an excellent sense of humor.
Throughout his entire life, Wayne was a voracious reader. Even at a young age, he was involved in the work of the regional historical society. It was well known that he had an extensive knowledge of history and geopolitical events around the world. He was an excellent reference source for understanding both the historical and contemporary factors that are contributing to the state of events that are occurring in the world today. He was not bashful about making comments on matters pertaining to the right wing or politics.
After graduating from college, Wayne moved to Toronto and several other major cities, but he never felt the need to obtain a driver’s license and he never owned a vehicle. He was a pioneer in the use of public transportation. In addition to being an avid snowshoer, Wayne would often spend hours wandering around Toronto’s ravines and trails on foot. In addition to his involvement with the Bruce Trail Conservancy, Wayne was an active member of the Toronto Bruce Trail Club. He was honored with the Nina Carlisle award in 2018 for the volunteer work he had done for a significant amount of time as a hike leader.
The week before he passed away, he was in the process of walking the final segment of the Trail from beginning to end. He met many other hikers who shared his passion for the sport over the years, and they became like a second family to him. Wayne, as a son, brother, uncle, and friend, you are greatly missed. Donations can be made in memory of Wayne to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Bruce Trail Conservancy by anyone who would like to do so. A private memorial service for the family and close friends will be held at a later time.
